The kick-off meeting of the SUSHEAS (Sustainable Production of High Entropy Alloys from Secondary Metals) project, coordinated by Bursa Technical University (BTU) and supported under the European Union’s Horizon Europe Programme, has been successfully held. The project, which will run for 48 months, aims to promote the recycling of metallic materials.

The opening meeting of the SUSHEAS project was organized by Bursa Technical University (BTU) with the online participation of international partners. In her opening remarks, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Beyhan Bayhan emphasized BTU’s strong commitment to European Union projects, particularly those focused on sustainability. Prof. Dr. Bayhan stated that the SUSHEAS project is well aligned with European priorities in circular economy, green manufacturing, and advanced engineering materials, and highlighted its significant contribution to the university’s research vision.

During the meeting, SUSHEAS Project Coordinator Prof. Dr. Deniz Uzunsoy presented the overall framework and management structure of the project. The presentation covered the scientific objectives, work packages, decision-making mechanisms, and staff mobility plans within the scope of the MSCA Staff Exchanges programme. Prof. Dr. Uzunsoy emphasized that SUSHEAS aims not only to develop next-generation materials but also to establish long-term knowledge and experience transfer between academia and industry.

Strong International Partnership

At the meeting, international project partners introduced their institutions and research capabilities. These included Brunel University London and Bournemouth University from the United Kingdom; the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) from Norway; the University of Porto and the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) from Portugal; and Suranaree University of Technology from Thailand. Each partner presented their contributions to the academic and research activities within the project.

From Türkiye, Sağlam Metal participates as a key partner, while QinetiQ and Guhring UK from the United Kingdom and Quintus Technologies from Sweden are involved as industrial partners. These organizations shared their application expertise, demonstration capabilities, and field experience related to the project.

What is the SUSHEAS Project?

Supported with a budget of €736,000 under the Horizon Europe Programme, the SUSHEAS project aims to enable the sustainable production of high-value high entropy alloy materials from waste and secondary metal resources. The project seeks to establish a strong collaboration network between universities and industry partners across Europe, contributing to reduced environmental impact and supporting the green transition in advanced materials technologies.

Within the framework of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Staff Exchanges programme, international staff mobility between partner institutions will be carried out. Through these exchanges, the project aims to facilitate interdisciplinary knowledge transfer and bidirectional collaboration between academia and industry. Participants will gain hands-on experience in advanced manufacturing techniques, comprehensive material characterization infrastructures, computational alloy design, and AI-assisted modeling approaches.
